Whadya think?

47. Please don't give him any more acid. Thank you.

To Joe Dumars. In the span of 14 months, he hired the wrong coach (Michael Curry), overpaid the wrong bench guys (Kwame Brown and Amir Johnson), traded the wrong star too early (Billups, who would have netted more than just an expiring cap figure near the deadline), extended the wrong star too early (Rip Hamilton), overrated the wrong young guy (Rodney Stuckey, who might not even be a point guard), threw away the wrong season (2008-09, when the East was more wide open than we thought), then made it up to Pistons fans by saying, "I just spent $94 million on two guys who will never make an All-Star team!" Shouldn't you be worried when your top five guys (Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva, Hamilton, Stuckey and Prince) are all perimeter guys who don't rebound, play inside or make other guys better?

lol @ overpaying Kwame.
$4 million for a solid defensive center is overpaying?

And, the team was better when Amir was on the court. $3.6 million isn't overpaying for Amir either.

I don't think Dumars thought of AI just as an expiring, I think he really did believe that AI could keep us a solid team. Certainly better than .500. That didn't turn out so well, but I really don't think he thought he was just getting an expiring in that deal. Even if we had kept Chauncey, the Cavs would have beaten us in the ECF (if we had even made it that far), so we just would've had yet another ECF loss.

Jury's still out on Stuckey, it's a little too early to say Dumars overrated him.

I do agree with the fact that he hired the wrong coach. And I don't really like the Rip extension either. I'm not high on the BG signing either. Villanueva and Wilcox were good pick-ups though.

Basically, most of this article is wrong, but it does have some good points.

I love Bill Simmons.

He speaks his mind about every team and that rubs people the wrong way. I could go on and on about how he is an idiot that doesn't know what he is talking about because he said that Shaq in Cleveland "won't end well," but I absolutely love all of his work. He is hands-down my favorite NBA journalist on a national level.

He has very unique opinions on everything (for example, read his thing about Quentin Richardson from the same piece) that seem so obvious once he explains it, however you would never have thought of it the same way as he did in a million years.

My advice is to not get offended when he questions Joe D's decisions this past year. Who cares that he did? Just because he is putting down the Pistons does not make him a "nutless idiot" and a "moron."

Actually, there's alot of validity to the article. I'm not quite sold on Stuckey as well and the best on the ball defenders we have is Maxiell and Washington...go figure. I bleed Piston Blue but, the truth is the truth, even though I believe that we're going to have a much better season than what most critics think.

I'll give him hiring M.C. but everything else is pure garbage. Isn't this from the same company that pretty much told NBA America there's no need to play the playoffs because the Cavs have it already won?

Take the homer glasses off, Bill does. He's a psycho Boston sports an, Celts, Sox and Bruins. But when they are doing goofy/stupid stuff, he has zero fear of calling out Ainge, Epstien and whomever the GM is for the Bruins. SO getting offended that he's a guy calling out Dumars and what seeming doesn't quite seem to be a clear path of this team, is stupid, and makes you look like a moron.

Read the threads and posts here in the last 14 months, he just wrpte and ESPN articale on Page 2 of a compilation of all the goofy stuff we've seen and written here in that span!

It may not all be the collective thought of the Psycho Detroit sports fan, but he's as entitled to put his thoughts out there as we are here!

Well put. People think that Simmons hates every team that isn't Boston. That's not true. He is very critical of the Celtics. It's not that he hates Detroit or Joe Dumars. He simply made some good observations and was funny while doing it.

He did make some good observations, but he made just as many bad observations. And when you're writing things that have already happened in the NBA, you should be able to get more than half of what you're writing right.

There... there are just so many things wrong, so much faulty logic, so much hypocrisy in that quoted Feldie post that I wouldn't even know where to begin. I'm glad I've got him on ignore.

All I know is this: Only a few current players can win two games per playoff series by themselves, and he's one of them. If the goal is to win the title and not just compete for one, then I want Ben Gordon on my team. It's as simple as that.

Bill Simmons said this not to long ago. Good to know this guy doesn't have an agenda. Like say...bashing Dumars. Roll Eyes

Claiming that Kwame and Amir were overpaid.
$4 million for a good defensive center is not overpaying. And $3.6 million for a role player isn't overpaying either.

Saying that we threw away the wrong season.
We still would've been worse than the Celtics, Magic and Cavs this year if we had kept Billups. And those are just the teams in the EC that we would've been worse than.

Saying that we traded Billups too early.
Dumars didn't think of AI as just an expiring (or at least I don't think he did). So saying that he would've netted more than an expiring is a dumb point to make, when Dumars didn't think he was just getting an expiring. He thought AI would help keep us in contention, while giving us financial flexibility if it didn't work out.

Saying that Rip was extended too early.
Rip wasn't extended too early, Dumars wants the three-guard rotation. When he extended Rip he knew that there was a chance that Ben Gordon would be the best player available in free agency this year.

Also, he did hand the reigns to Stuckey, but he didn't claim that Stuckey would be a star right off the bat. He played decent as a 2nd year player on a team with a terrible coach and teammates with poor attitudes.

He's right about hiring the wrong coach. He's also right about spending a ton of money on BG and CV. And he's also got a point with the "Shouldn't you be worried when your top five guys (Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva, Hamilton, Stuckey and Prince) are all perimeter guys who don't rebound, play inside or make other guys better?" remark.

So,
Bad observations: 5
Good observations: 3

Why do people take what Bill Simmons says so personally? He clearly does not have an agenda against Joe Dumars. That's a silly accusation.

He has repeatedly said that the top 4 contenders have all gotten worse. He hates the Shaq trade, hates what Orlando did, hates what Boston did and hates what LA did.

He does not have an agenda against any team. He's just very opinionated and has unique perspectives.

He is, hands-down, my favorite NBA writer.

You'd think Simmons would praise Dumars for signing one of the few guys in the NBA that can single-handedly win playoffs games. A guy that Simmons would want on his team btw.

Instead he accuses Dumars of using lsd.

I can see why you like this guy.

What makes you say that? Is it because I'm a Cavs fan.

I understand that people outside of Detroit, especially in Cleveland, don't know crap about basketball. I apologize for inconveniencing you and your infinite wisdom.

It is not that people in Cleveland don't know anything about basketball...

It is just that you guys have no idea what it takes to win a championship! Wink
