Pistons coach Curry: 'I think we can win this series'

By VINCE ELLIS
Detroit Free Press

Monday, April 20, 2009

Coach Michael Curry let everybody know his mind-set early on during media availability today at the Pistons’ practice facility.

A questioner started, “You remain confident you guys can make this a competitive series, does it help … ”

And that’s when Curry interrupted the reporter with: “I think we can win this series.”

The questioner finished with a query about whether the Pistons take any solace in the fact that lower seeds have won four of the eight Game 1s in the NBA playoffs, but Curry was making a point that he wants to do more than stay close to the Cavaliers in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series Tuesday.

He is planning on a seven-game series and doesn’t think his Pistons will become playoff fodder for the Cavs’ championship express.

That’s despite a 102-84 Game 1 loss Saturday that has many thinking the only drama in this series is whether the Pistons will win a game.

That’s despite the Cavs possessing the best player on the floor in LeBron James, who dominated the Pistons with 38 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

That’s despite the Pistons actually playing well on offense in Game 1 and still losing by 18 points.

That’s despite the Cavs losing only two games at home all season, the last loss occurring while they rested many of their top players, including James.

But Curry doesn’t need to see other lower seeds excel to believe in his team.

“I’m confident going into this series,” Curry said. “Regardless of whatever happens in the other series. I’m not really paying too much attention to those series."

He is right, we can. I just don't think we will. Not unless there is a serious change of the guard from the 'starters' to the 'youngins'.

I personally feel everytime the Stones get out on the court, they, even this team, can win, against anyone. So I still believe in this team, but I want to see more heart and drive....

Yeah, around the time they used to have the best post defender of the era named Ben Wallace, who is now a Cav, of all things... Strange how that works out...

You guys lost your heart when you gave up Big Ben.
You then lost your soul when you gave up Chauncey.

It's over.

I understand you will have a lot of cash in 2010 though, so you will be back in the mix in no time I'm sure.

Pistons still had heart and soul, just lacked talent at key positions... McD is all the heart the Pistons needed. Sheed was all the soul the Pistons needed.
