From HeatSince88 on RealGM:

quote:

- Let's say Lakers are offering 4 years, $36 million. Due to state income tax differences, that's like being paid 4 years $32.7 million by Miami. Odom would receive the same "net" money in either contract after taxes

- So Miami signs Odom to a full MLE deal ($5.9 mill first season) with an opt out after one season

- Then he uses the option to become a free agent in 2010 when we have the cap room to reward him, at which point Riley gives him 3 years $26.8 million. If you're wondering, that's a contract starting at about $8 million and escalating from there. Add that 3yr $26.8 million contract, plus the $5.9 mill Lamar earned in the first season from the MLE, and it equals ...

4 years, $32.7 million from the Heat

Which again, nets Lamar the same as 4 years $36 million would in California (9% state income tax).

And there I was frozen, standin in my backyard
Face to face, eye to eye, starin at the last star
I should've known, walked all the way home
To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone.

I can't believe Portland isn't going to trump that deal. To me Odom is a bargain at 7-8mil. Why wouldn't Portland offer him a contract that starts in that range? They can put a players option in it just like the Heat. They could use some depth in their front court and Lamar can play both forward positions.

Hold on a minute.

He assembled one of the youngest teams in the leauge last year, and they still won 54 games. They've still got cap space to add another piece. Pritchard (their GM) is FAR from awful.

I would like to know what makes Pritchard awful also? His team is on the rise and they are in a position to make moves that will put them in the elite group. IMO he is doing everything right.

The math is not quite that easy.
You are assuming that ALL of the $36 mil will be taxed by California, and NONE of the $32.8 mil will be taxed by Florida or anybody else. Athletes, rock stars, or anybody else pay taxes in the states where they actually MADE their money.
I read a story in the paper about how much of a windfall it is for Detroit and Michigan when the Yankees come to town. A-Rod alone today would, based on a $33 mil salary, pay the state of Michigan close to $25,000 for a 3 game homestand...and Detroit city taxes on top of that.

Unless basketball is different than any other business, this has to be regarded as flawed info.
