we're dead last used in total possessions used so far. their playing the same walk-it-up style as the "old" piston teams. what happened to all that talk about being more uptempo? i think weve been deceived.

Not surprising; this happens every year. It's become an off-season tradition for players and coaches to lie about how they'll play faster.

Pace-shence... as in patience.

Let's wait a good 15-20 games before making concrete evaluations of this team. I'd hold off before making declarations about most things, particularly with Rip out of the line-up. It might end up being the case that pace is an issue, but it's so, so early in the season still.

If slowing it down wins games, then we slow it down, you gotta realize if you wanna run up the court pass the ball 2-3 times you can run all day, if you wanna run a offense it takes more time then that

Also...

Fast Paced style will win you plenty of regular season games. Slow paced style will win you a championship if you have any chance of winning one to begin with. Not saying either of these apply to our Pistons, but it's food for thought. I'm pretty much repeating what everyone has already known to be true. I have no issue with the current play style though.

we dont need to play "fast paced" but we shouldnt be walking the ball up the court every time. im not expecting them to be the phx suns, im just disheartened that their playing slower than the freaking bobcats.

Agree with Blackthought. I always laugh at the exciting run and gun teams that rack up a bunch of regular season wins, then get beat up in the playoffs. I much prefer a really slow paced team to a fast paced one.

again, im not suggesting they should play "run and gun". they shouldnt. but at the same time they shouldnt be the slowest god dam team in the league. their needs to be some type of balance.

I saw plenty of fast breaks yesterday off of defensive rebounds. Wallace is usually quick with the outlet. Now if Stuckey could make the right pass/open court move then we could actually see some production out of transition.

I don't want them to become the Suns, how's the run and gun worked out for them?

From what I can tell we are definitely playing at a faster pace and overall tempo than we have in years past. Are you watching the games or just reading stats and box scores?

your self-perceived perceptions are irrelevant. this team doesnt look to run.all they do is let bynum and stuckey take turns isoing after walking the ball up. that is fact. it is as undeniable as 2+2=4.

yeah our supposed up tempo game isnt up tempo at all .. you gotta push it after the other teams score and dont wait for their defense to set up

multiple 50/60 win seasons and some deep playoff runs. you wouldnt take that? but this isnt about being the suns. its about our team playing as slow as molasses.

There has to be a good balance.

The Pistons have tried to play uptempo at times, but some of those times have also really hurt them. When you push the ball and you don't convert, it allows other teams to do it right back at you, and if they're better equipped to run, you're fighting a losing battle. I think that's what you saw in some of those third quarters against the Thunder and Bucks. Pushing the tempo, missing, not getting back on defense, and allowing them to score fast break points or early in the possession shots because the defense wasn't set. Could have been the same case against Orlando if they were actually making more of their three pointers.

One of the things that has to happen to effectively run is having the right defensive mentality. If you push the ball, you have to be prepared to get back in transition defense if you don't convert. With some of the guys, especially a few coming off the bench, pushing the ball will completely backfire on the Pistons.

Secondly, you have to have the right personnel. The Phoenix Suns had the point guard and the players (minus Shaq's stay) to be a great uptempo team. The Pistons don't necessarily have all the right pieces for that yet. Ben and Kwame aren't exactly the right types of bigs to run the court to help push the ball and finish in transition. Tay really isn't that kind of transition player anymore unless it's a turnover in the middle of the court where there is no defense back. Rip and BG and Charlie and Wilcox can be those types of players but Charlie and Wilcox are not good defenders or aware enough to get back in transition defense. And, Stuckey and Bynum aren't the type of push lead guards that will always make the right decision in transition. They're both more concerned about finishing and scoring than finding the right wing players and trailers to finish a break.

So, criticize the lack of uptempo all you want. This team doesn't have the right pieces to do it, the defensive mentality and discipline, and there has to be a balance between uptempo and halfcourt management.
