Pistons' Jonas Jerebko faces possible suspension for fight in preseason opener

By A. Sherrod Blakely

October 06, 2009, 12:00AM

AUBURN HILLS -- Detroit Pistons rookie Jonas Jerebko and the Miami Heat's Jamaal Magloire were ejected with 5:04 to play in Monday's preseason game for throwing punches.

Both players likely will face additional league punishments that might include a suspension.

The incident occurred when both players were going for a rebound. Their arms got tangled, and as both were falling toward the floor, Magliore landed a blow to Jerebko's face. As they hit the ground, Jerebko landed a blow to Magloire's face.

"He got me on the nose, and I got him back," Jerebko said. "What can I say?"

Jerebko, like Detroit's other rookies, has shown a willingness to get physical.

"We're rookies, but if you get us, we have to get you back," he said.

I didn't know Jerebko hit him, I just saw him laying on the ground, they played the replay a bunch of times and all I saw was him being hit.

It's very clear to see Jerebko punch Magloire when he hits the floor.

I didn't see him hit back either, but I'm glad he did. Unless its a very important game, if someone hits you, you have to hit them back.

On the replay, you could see Magloire get hit in the face as he went down, and it was definitely after Magloire hit Jerebko in the face, seemingly intentionally. But I wouldn't really give Jerebko any "bad boy" merit badge on that one. More than anything, it looked like natural instinct. Don't think it was particularly tough and they were both flat on their backs. Not like he went after Magloire or anything.

But I'll give him a little credit for being in the situation in the first place, with his arms tangled up with Magloire's fighting for a rebound. He was hustling out there and scrapping with a much stronger guy for a rebound.

But the retaliation "punch," doesn't really earn his stripes just yet.

Jerebko threw a punch? I missed that. Pretty slick, Jonas.

I wish I would have seen what JJ did back. It looked like he tried to push himself away from Magloire, but the replays I saw on FSN didn't show anything to warrant the one game suspension he was given.

Magloire was suspended for two games and Jerebko one, to be served at the start of the regular season. No big deal. He probably wouldn't have been in the lineup anyway.

I was watching the FSN broadcast too. On the replay, you saw Magloire hit Jerebko in the face and then the camera panned to the left where you see Magloire's head going to the ground with a hand hitting it. It wasn't easy to pick up when it happened, and not altogether easy to see it on the replay because it was only for a split second at the end of the replay. But there was definitely a retaliatory punch by Jerebko after Magloire hit him first.
