During this off season we had what, 20 some million to spend of free agents. I don't remember the exact amount. So, what did we do with this money, we got a PF and a SG.

Problem, we don't exactly have a need a the SG spot at the moment. Hamilton is very capable at that position. It is arguable whether he or Gordon is better. So, we essentially shelled out all this money, for a bench player, filling a need we don't have. I won't bring up the draft, but to say Mr. Lawson is looking pretty good in Denver. A pass first PG...who knew.

I mean, this team has quite a few holes, wouldn't the money have been better spent on one of them. When I go through the list of reasons we were so bad last season, it wasn't because of a lack of a 10 million dollar backup SG.

And if they were no players to fill those holes, wouldn't have been smarter to sit on the money. It would have given us space at the deadline to swing a major deal, or get one of the big names at the end of the season. The way things are stacked now, the real only logical choice is to trade Rip since you just locked up Gordon to a long term.

i'd trade villanueva before gordon. and i'd trade gordon before rip. i dont feel like we're obligated to them just because they have fresh contracts (nazr mohammed, anyone?).

but anyhow, i was kinda like wtf at this past offseason. im thinking we were clearing all that space to swing a guy like stoudemire or bosh. knowing what i know now, i think i'd rather have chauncey back. i dont know what the hell joe's doing with this team. but on the bright side, we have some nice trade pieces. with the cap rumoured to drop as much as $8 mil in 2010, i don't think i would've sat on that cap space either

This team isn't a finished product by any means. So, I wouldn't worry to much about it because it's a work in progress.

I understand your anger with the way Jow spent the money. Not the way I imagined it. But, if you are running a business I don't think you can sit on that cap space. You think the pampered Pistons fans are upset now. Think of what that would have done when none of the big names signed us next year.

It's seems to me that Joe has decided to build this team through trades. He's watching for firesales and going to unload a few of his larger contracts or young players. Personally, I look for Rip to be gone by season end.

I think he got Gordon because that would make Rip expendable. He got Villanueva because he's stretch PF like Sheed. And he drafted Daye to make Tay expendable if it was possible.

I don't have a problem with the moves. I'm sure the process is not complete.

My guess is we spent the money with this plan in mind.

Amare, Bosh etc. aren't coming here if Miami, NY etc have the cap space to sign them. We aren't a FA destination. We aren't the nice weather (LA, Miami etc) or marketing capitol (NY, Chi Town) that some other places are. We don't have a superstar to lure other stars here (Bron and Bosh in NY, Wade and Bosh in Miami)

I think this is what Joe is planning.

1. during the year watch for sign and trade with Toronto as they don't want to lose Bosh for nothing in return. Same with Amare.

2. If we can complete sign and trade, we use the fact that we can then pay them more than anyone with their bird rights. Couple that with selling them on the whole Pistons culture once they're here. It's a risk, but if it succeeds, great. If not we have cap space moving forward.

3. If none of the above materializes, then at least we have solid parts and will suck enough to get a good draft pick. We may even be able to package our 9-15th pick with a player like Tay for a top 3 pick in return.

In short, anyone with a set of eyeballs could see this season was maneuvering. If Joe can't get the big trade/FA, he's in great position to keep a couple of key pieces and rebuild it from the ground up.

When Joe D made these moves I thought they were okay, because sitting on the cap would be ludicris. But then the trade offer came along that would have neeted us a young defensive PG and cap space to add to the team next year. Joe should have changed his plans right then and their. instead of hanging onto Stuckey he should have trade him for one of the better PG's in this league and used that gut to get us a superstar the following year. CV can be used the same way. Bosh and Amare are on he market he can be used as a sign and trade piece to get us a really good player that year. Joe missed on this oppertunity and i am upset.

WHAT?????????

We didnt need a 3pt shooter???? We didnt need somebody who could create his own shot???????

Do you not remember last season at all????

Ty Lawson? We need forwards before we needed a 3rd PG.

You guys are failing to realize how much of a weapon it is to have a guy averaged 20 off the bench who hits big shots...Plus, say Rip leaves in a few years, he can step in and start.

You think Chris Bosh and Stoudemire would be used as a sign and trade piece? I havent heard something more unrealistic in my life. Hell, these guys wont even be on the pool.

And Ray Allen expires yes, but we wouldnt have a SG to replace him. We would also have to extend Rondo the 80 million dollars too. We would be starting rookies all over the place

Ray Allens contract is around 15million, but the cap is dropping. That could very well be about 7 million and that aint getting you no superstar. Factor in we still have to give a pretty penny to extend Rondo.

I absolutley agree with this post. I think Joe knows that although Ben Gordon was not the ideal aquisition in terms of positon, he clearly does give the Pistons a trade asset in that he or (Prince/Hamilton) can be traded. Personaly, I want to keep Hamilton and hope the others are traded for someone like Bosh.

It could be that Gordon was signed with a trade deadline deal in the works that we do not know about.
