You can factor that into his play, but some of the negatives in his performance has nothing to do with missing time or recovering from injury. His defensive awareness needs to be sharpened. He should work on his footwork and positioning on defense. Offensively, he should come around. But, criticism is part of being a pro athlete, so once he starts playing better, people will be a lot easier on him.

It actually does? Dont act like his legs are back and under him. This guy has played 4 games since May excluding the few in the FIBA tournament.

Every veteran player starts the reason a step slow.

You think he isnt playing hard though. Since he was in High School people said he always dogged it. He doesnt, many people have said the game just comes easy to him. He isnt dogging it.

I think he is what he is showing. atm. You can wait all you want though. Just like you waited for Delfino, Darko and still waiting for Stuckey.

Like we waited for Delfino and Darko?

Before Delfino came to Detroit, was he averaging 17 and 7 for somebody else? Where they already proven NBA players before they came here?

Villanueva isnt some young dude trying to prove himself. Hes already a proven offensive player.

He averaged 20 and 10 per 36 last season. This isnt some young prospect who he is supposed to be good. Hes already very good and getting better.

Austin Croshere averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds per 36 minutes on that same Milwaukee Bucks team last year. I wonder why he didn't make a roster this season...

So you are telling me that NBA Veterans are in midseason form the first week of the season?

What about veterans who miss preseason and training camp?

Show me a player who missed a month of summer work and came back and started playing his best basketball the first week of the season?

Austin Croshere played 7 god **** minutes a game. He averaged 3ppg.

Finish up your knee jerk reactions, and I'll bump these up later on in the season.

The best part is when players start playing like their old selfs and you are the ones saying 'I always knew hed come through!"

I needed a good laugh today. Thanks.

lol what the hell are you so mad about?

"playing like their old selfs"??

do you even know what villanueva played like last season? or are you just sucking off his numbers?

all numbers aren't created equal. everybody in the league knows what his stats were. yet there's a reason why villanueva was so cheap

Clearly, you don't understand why I made the comparison. You can't just translate stats to per 36 minute stats.

Charlie is in his early to mid 20s and hasn't had any major injuries and doesn't have any condition that should limit his playing time, yet not once in his four previous seasons has he averaged 30 mpg. Why? Why if he's capable of being a 20/10 guy or even a 17 ppg guy consistently? Why haven't coaches giving him true starter minutes?

That Bucks team last year started Luc Mbah a Moute at power forward, had Malik Allen as the other power forward, and Michael Redd and Andrew Bogut were injured most of the season, and Charlie still didn't average 30 mpg. So what does that tell you?

That's not who he is. Don't mention his per 36 minutes stats because it's irrelevant if he's not going to average 36 minutes a game.

At best, he's a 30 mpg player who's playing with two guys that are capable of average 20 ppg plus another young ball dominating guard who is still establishing himself in Stuckey. He's not going to average 17 ppg. He'll be lucky if he averages 15 ppg, and that's generous. More than likely, he'll be somewhere around 12-13 ppg. He's a $7 million a year player. So that's fine. Stop expecting him to put up numbers a guy who's making $10+ million a year should be putting up.

Charlies old self is a versatile big man who can shoot the ball better than average.

What you just told me is that Villanueva is only good enough to average 8 and 3 on 31% shooting, you are telling me that he has maxed out offensively this season.

Whos the one not watching basketball again?

show me where i said this?

yeah, that's what i thought.

i'm not basing my opinion of him off two games. believe it or not, his career didn't start this week. but i wouldn't expect someone like you who'd never seen villanueva play until this preseason to understand that

it's obvious by your defensiveness and inability to understand what anyone in this thread is talking about that you just went to some stats website and determined that villanueva is a "proven scorer." do you even know how he likes to get his points? is he in the low post? high post? pick & roll? off the dribble? cuts? spot-ups? i doubt you do, because villanueva doesn't even know his d@mn self.

and until he figures it out and masters it, he's not "proven." villanueva and david lee both averaged more points than kevin garnett last season and anybody with a pair of eyes knows which of those three should have the ball in their hands.

simply put - villanueva has not developed the skills yet to be a 20/10 big man in the mold that most teams need. nor, in spite of his stats, has he developed them enough to be a 16/7 big man in the mold that most teams need. i hope he gets there, but he's not even close right now. this is the reason why somebody like lamarcus aldridge is getting $13 mil/yr contracts while guys like lee and villanueva would get laughed outta the room. again, this would require you to watch basketball to understand. you might want to start someday soon
